Research Interests

My research interest is evolutionary biology in general and more specifically how organisms adapt to a changing environment and how the rate of adaptation is hampered by correlations between phenotypic traits. I am also interested in how evolutionary stasis influences organismal communities we see today. I approach these problems using phylogenetic comparative methods and controlled experiments.

The main subject of investigations concern the ecology, ethology and zoogeography of Hymenoptera Aculeata in topics:
- bioindication of developmental processes in ecosystem and landscape levels

Research Interests

Potential applications of Diptera in post-mortem interval (PMI) calculations are among my research interests, however the main topic of my research work now is a comparative study of the morphology of immature stages of Diptera, mainly Muscidae and Fanniidae. I have started also research projects on DNA barcoding and temperature dependent development of forensically important species. Work on the morphology of immature stages of carrion breeding species provided me with substantial experience of work with laboratory breeding of various species of flies and studying their detailed larval morphology, with a combination of light and scanning electron microscopy methods. Currently I study morphological adaptations of larval stages to their natural habitats. I am also interested in phylogeny, especially of Calyptratae, and the potential use of of larval and adults morphology together with molecular methods.

Scientific interests

My early entomological interest in the ecology and biogeography of parasitic Hymenoptera confronted me with the necessity to develop analytical tools to understand patterns of diversity and distribution from local to continental scales. Therefore I turned to ecological statistics and became particularly interested in patterns of species co-occurrence and phylogenetic constraints. In  cooperation with friends from USA, Brazil, and Spain we developed a number of sophisticated statistical tools in macroecology and clarified basic questions around community assembly. Recently, we apply these techniques to understand the spatial distributions of plant and animal species.
